Believe In Ghosts For A Day
On Halloween we allowed ourselves to stay away from what we know to be rational and become more accepting of the so called non-status quo. We entertain the truth that there may be spirits haunting our world for one cause or another. We are permitted for this day to have fun and step outside of what we view as normal. On this holiday, also known as All Hallow’s Eve, children dress up in their Halloween costumes and travel around the neighborhood in search of candy. Adults typically dress up as well and attend parties. As opposed to the your average usual Halloween, what if you decide to do something different this year?
Do people really believe that ghosts or spirits are roaming this world? For most people the answer is no. In most places this is the truth, but there are also many attractions that claim to have actual ghosts who for whatever reason continue to haunt that site. So as opposed to participating in the “usual” Halloween activities this year, why not venture out to some of these places and see if you can encounter some of these ghosts? Why not discover some of these places on the the spookiest day of the year? If you’re in the areas of Myrtle Beach, St Augustine or the Florida Keys you should afford these ghostly attractions a shot, maybe you’ll encounter something unbelievable there that is more than just your imagination.
Bootiful Myrtle Beach Thrills
Myrtle Beach, is an attraction that is very distinctive and guests and residents really get a unique experience. There is a place called the Ghosts and Legends Theater that has a secret wall where you enter into a world where you encounter 4 ghosts represented in human form. You can do this any day of the year. These spirits are known as Alice of Hermitage, Edward Teach or Blackbeard, Sonny Jim who is a slave ghost, and a spirit who warns residents of approaching hurricanes identified as The Grey Man.
You can come anytime, although it is good to remember that the summer is the busy time of year due to the location, but on Halloween day there are many special activities so a fall visit may be good too. In addition to the theatre performances and walking tours that are offered, there is trick-or-treating for the children. You’ll see plenty of Halloween decorations that set the mood just right for this time of year and help to create that eerie atmosphere we all desire on October 31st.
St. Augustine’s Ghostly Tours
For Halloween you may consider St Augustine, which is known as one of the most haunted places in the world, probably because it is the oldest city. Here you can go on The Ghost Tours of St Augustine. The Ghost of an old Seminole Chief is one of the most famous ghosts you’ll encounter named Osceola. In Castillo de San Marcos, during the Second Seminole war, Osceola captured and help after being tricked into thinking there was going to be a truce. He was relocated following his capture and later died of malaria in 1838 at Fort Moultrie in South Caroline. He was probably relocated because of the outrage his capture was sure to spark.
The events that followed his death are believed to be the reason for his documented spiritual visits in Castillo de San Marcos. His head was embalmed after being detached by Frederick Weedon, an Army doctor. In 1885 this head was entered into the collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, but that was not before it was lost and then found again. So the reason he haunts Castillo de San Marcos so much is because his head traveled around so much after his death and his spirit became restless. So go find the spirit of Osceola this Halloween and take a ghostly tour.
The Florida Keys
If you find yourself in the Florida Keys around Halloween you should venture to Key West and experience their annual Fantasy Fest (not recommended for children). If you’re searching to be haunted on Halloween there are numerous opportunities to do so on ghost walks and tours that are presented. Tony’s Saloon, which was a morgue between 1852 and 1875 is another place you can visit, along with a stop for pirates and other questionable individuals.
In 1862, at Fort Zachary Taylor there was a yellow fever outbreak that killed hundreds of Union soldiers. This place is actually in the Florida Keys and is another place you can check out. When a civil engineer named Howard England was excavating the site in the 1960′s he claimed the ghost of Wendell Gardner, a Civil War soldier, appeared before him and pointed him toward another excavation site. An enormous mass of Civil War weapons were discovered on this site. It ended up being the largest collection of Civil War weapons ever found. The Gardner family later confirmed that Wendell was in fact a Civil War soldier that perished during the yellow fever epidemic that swept through the fort. If you decide to go to The Haunting of Fort Zachary Taylor, you’ll definitely be haunted by the ghost of Wendell Gardner, but some say also the ghost of Howard England.
If you truly desire to run into a ghost, there are really only a few opportunities out there. While others will dress up and attend the neighborhood parties on Halloween or go trick or treating or something typical, you now know about some of the opportunities to really do something different. All 3 of these cities present various great options and lodging accommodations, hundreds of gorgeous hotels and Bluegreen vacation club options. There are many sites, tales and tours that could put you in contact with ghosts and change what you believed previously to simply be fabricated, and what better time to go into the unknown than on Halloween.
