Here. In a word, “Barbaric.” Being in nursing, & as I like history. Civil war (& age of sail) medicine is an interest of mine. There are two good books in print on this topic. It doesn’t sound like you want to spend that much time on this, though.
A soft lead, subsonic bullet, would shatter several inches of bone hit. They had no choice but to amputate.8/10 amputees died from complications (usually infxn). This contradicts the above link. I’ve read very different numbers elsewhere. The aseptic techniques of the times were severely wanting. They used hack saws to perform amputations. Most of these were done w/o any pain killers. Imagine having someone saw off an arm or leg of yours w/o any pain meds. Lucky officers might sometimes get laudinum (opiate). A sucking chest, or abdominal wound meant slow & certain death. You can see pix of dead soldiers w/disheveled clothing. It looks as if someone was searching them after they died. What happened, was the wounded soldiers would pull apart their clothing, to see where they’d been hit. If they were gut-shot. They knew they would suffer for a while, then die. Some advances were made during the conflict (union troops always having more resources). All in all, medieval medicine was employed. Good Luck.
