Why didn’t the democrats support keeping the Union together during the Civil War?
Democrats never want to fight for freedom, not even to end slavery or the civil war
The Copperheads were a vocal group of Democrats in the North (see also Union (American Civil War)) who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. The name Copperheads was given to them by their opponents, the Republicans, because the deadly copperhead snake can strike without warning (unlike a rattlesnake).
They were also called “Peace Democrats” and “Butternuts” (for the color of the Confederate uniforms). The most famous Copperhead was Ohio’s Clement L. Vallandigham, who was a vehement opponent of President Abraham Lincoln’s policies.

first off they were called Copperheads becasue they wore either a copper penny, or the head of Liberty cut from a penny on their lapels as a badge to identify their beliefs. You should read some scholarly works not Wikipedia for real information. Nor does cutting and pasting from inaccurate wiki articles impressive in the least. You might also note they were a small minority of the Democratic party even then. Most democrats in the north supported the war, and many fought in Union Blue.
