How did a 1926 Macy’s Division Store one-cent weighing scale find yourself in the “maze” of Tarpon Springs, FL. The “maze” was a 20-30 acre wilderness space where many dirt bikers and other off-the-highway fanatics would venture. No houses or buildings were ever on this property. I might steel detect that area searching for arrow heads and Indian relics, and sooner or later had the shock of finding that scale. For several years I tried to seek out an answer to how and why it was buried/dumped in this maze. Perhaps, simply perhaps, if Al Capone was right here he could reply my inquiry. The closest building of significance was the Anclote Psychiatric Hospital. In the Roaring Twenties, that hospital was a resort hotel where Al was a frequent customer and believed by locals to be the owner. Research could not show Capone’s possession or that the dimensions was part of the hotel, but speaking to a ninety four year outdated former employee, I found that the resort had a big scale in the foyer that guests would drop a penny in and weigh themselves. That might be a historic link.
I discovered an Orage Belt Railroad lock and every time I take a look at it, I am drawn to the suicide loss of life of pioneer builder and developer Hamilton Disston. Historians say that Disston could simply have saved his financial empire and brought a spot with the good leaders who developed the Sunshine State but his inability to acquire headquarters for the Orange Belt Line contributed to his death at younger age of fifty one and Disston Metropolis grew to become a small suburb (Gulf Port) of St. Petersburg.
