On the march (or on “campaign” as it’s sometimes called), camps were very basic. Supply trains did not always keep up and troop did not always have the energy or ambition to set up tents. They’d merely gather a ‘mess’ of several other men, build a small fire for cooking rations and for warmth, and then lay out gum blankets (rubberized poncho), wool blanket, backpacks for pillows, and sometimes canvas shelter halves. Rifles and gear would be stacked. This style of camp resembled more of a refugee camp on-the-move than an organized, neatly aligned camp.
Winter camps were more permanent and consisted of canvas covered cabins, dugouts, and company streets (kind of like a neighborhood in suburbia, except replace the houses with tents).
In your searching, try “confederate camp” or “union camp” or even “tintype”
Here’s a list of reenactor groups that may have some camp photos (in color, nonetheless). http://www.sutler.net/units.asp
