Similarities between North and South (Civil War Era)?
Okay, so I’m doing a Venn Diagram for Similarities and Differences between the North and the South. Differences are pretty easy so what I really need are some similarities (although you can give some differences so I can see if I don’t already have them).
Also, I have one similarity as railroad. Would that work? I was thinking although the North had a better railroad, they both still had it. Same with steam boats (I just thought of that one)?
Both sides were American.
Both sides were beginning with volunteer, poorly educated, mostly white troops, but both sides began to “fuzz” the line shortly after Gettysburg, with the North conscripting Blacks and immigrants, and the South conscripting anybody they could find.
Both sides spoke English.
Both sides had relatives on either side of the war.
Both sides distrusted Indians.
Both sides wanted to expand.
Both sides at the beginning had the same weapons.
Both sides had a total misconception, leading to horrible losses, of the effect of improved firepower on Napoleonic line tactics.
Both sides had poor medical care.
Both sides raised regional units, which led to sharp depopulation of rural areas after major battles.
Is that enough?
