F. Joshua Chamberlain, though he was only a Lt. Col. at Gettysburg. He was promoted to general after his supposed death. Reports of the death of this hero after the battle of Quaker Road prompted his promotion. However, it turned out he was merely wounded and in a military hospital. He accepted Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. After the war he returned to teach at his alma mater at Bowdoin College in Maine and served as that states governor.
