What do I need for historically accurate women’s Civil War era attire?
I am 20, and in college. I may be giving tours at local Civil War era historical houses next spring, and I’d like to have the proper costumes.
Honey, those tour guides only wear the outer stuff, going for total realism would be heavy and hot.
I don’t even know if I can name everything they wore, but there was a camisole, a corset, with holes for ribbons that were used to tie up the hose/stockings, a corset cover, an under petticoat, hoops, and over petticoat, the dress; maybe I missed a petticoat, don’t know, but the corset alone would kill you, especially since the goal was to be reduced to an 18 inch waist.
If they were going outside then a hat and gloves, usually kid for the wealthy, and some sort of pelisse or shaw, even in summer, and don’t forget your parasol, only the lower classes were tanned or had freckles.
Wear your regular underwear and hoops with a dress over it and everyone will be happy, including you.
