May 5 A Great Holiday For Anyone
Indeed, May 5 is Cinco de Mayo, but believe it or not, there have been a lot of very significant events that took place on May 5 throughout history. Any day has historically significant events, but some of these are pretty big. May 5 saw the beginnings of the French Revolution and two civil wars in England. You won’t even need to get personal loans to learn this stuff at some school, and you can be the know-it-all of Cinco de Mayo parties.
May 5, 1215: First Baron’s War
There wasn’t a huge historic occurrence on May 5, 1215 – aside from King John (the one from Robin Hood) giving a castle back to the Archbishop of Canterbury. It was the start of the First Baron’s War, which forced the king to sign the Magna Carta. It reined in the power of the monarch, but more importantly began the principle in law of Habeus Corpus.
The Short Parliament of May 5 1640
King Charles I of England wasn’t popular. He taxed and spent too much, and wanted more to fight the Scots. He wanted more money, and convened Parliament in April of 1640 to get it. They weren’t in a giving mood. After three weeks of deliberation, he dissolved Parliament on May 5, 1640. Later that year, his war on Scotland bankrupted him and he reconvened Parliament for a bailout. That was called the Long Parliament, who also weren’t amused. Armed conflicts started to break out, and King Charles was beheaded in 1649. There wasn’t another king until 1660, with far fewer powers.
The Estates General: May 5, 1789
The Estates General was a French representative body. It included the Three Estates, which were the Clergy, Nobility, and Everyone else. King Louis the 16th wanted more money, so he convened the first Estates General in over 100 years to get it. The French Revolution started right there, as they, just like the Short Parliament, were not amused. On St. Helena, an island in the Atlantes, Napoleon Bonaparte would die 32 years later to the day, on May 5, 1821.
The Battle of Puebla
May 5 1862 saw the defeat of the army of Napoleon III by the Mexican forces of Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin at the Battle of Puebla. It stopped European powers from interfering in Mexico. That is where we get Cinco de Mayo from. Though that Cinco de Mayo is certainly significant, many important events have happened on May 5 throughout the centuries.
